More PS3 events today are as follows: naturesbane has updated his NPD header format (and compression notes) at PS3Dev.PS3News.com and nikkelitous has shared his SCE File Format findings along with an updated XLS SpreadSheet and Hex Workshop .hls file that allows users to create 'structures' in Hex Workshop detailing the data found from the header thus far. Oh, and be sure to grab the NPUA80093_113_release.self (the same file that gets replaced to provide the hack allowing Devs to put .selfs onto their PS3 systems- this time from $CEA's Prod Server before it was taken offline)!

Up until now, the only way to make PS3 back-ups was to use the PS3 Linux Method or PS3 SAK v1.00. Tonight, resident PS3Dev'er hacked2123 is planning to share with the world how to make PS3 disc back-ups via the PS3 XMB! To quote:

I am currently developing a barbaric method by which I have already been able to dump a small section of the Bluray games while in the XMB. I will create the necessary file to dump the entire disk tonight and post it here.

Requirements: (Only tested on firmware 1.11)
1. DVD or Bluray Burner
2. An IDE to SATA Adapter
3. An IDE Hard-Drive
4. My guide

oula vive l'anglais les amis il va partager une méthode qui permettra peut etre de faire un backup via l'XMB ... pas de lancer un backup via l'XMB (je dirais heuresement ) car le seul moyen de faire un backup pour le moment, c'est le SAK ou Linux. Il aurait réussi a extraire un bout d'un jeu a partir du XMB voili voulou ...

En tout cas personnellement j'espère qu'on en arrivera pas aux backups

c'est quand meme con de faire cette manip qui fait sauter la garantie ... quand il suffit d'installer Linux ou meme plus rapide, SAK ... C'est rien d'autre qu'un DUMP a partir du XMB de possible, apres le faire loader cest une autre histoire

Je comprend pas trop ce qu'il fait exactement, bon j'crois qu'il est en 1.11 donc impossible pour moi.

Mais il met un dvd dans la PS3, il débranche le DD, il met Virtua fighter 5, il rebranche le DD et hop il reussi a faire un backup a partir du XMB ?

Quelqu'un pourrait traduire sa méthode c'est juste par curiosité.

This video demonstrates the 3rd of my hotswap methods, and also a new method by which you can backup disks inserted into the BD-Drive of your PS3.

To begin you need:
1. DVD Burner and Blank DVD
2. PS3
3. An IDE to SATA adapter as well as a way to attach a sata device to you PS3.

4. An IDE hard-Drive

Once all materials have been obtained follow these directions:

1. Burn "XMB_BACKUP_DISK.ISO" to a DVD-/+R
2. Boot your PS3 up and insert the disk and then select the data disk in the "Photo" area
3. Goto "System Settings" on the XMB but do not select it.
4. Remove the SATA cable from either the drive or the PS3
5. Select "System Setting"
6. Eject the data disk
7. Insert the disk you wish to backup
8. Wait for a short time till you feel the disk would have been intialized normally.
9. Reconnect the SATA cable
10. Goto the "Photo" area and copy "backup4GB.TIFF" to the HDD (used tiff for a joke)
11. Copy to your external hdd to examine contents

THIS METHOD IS NOT PRACTICAL FOR BACKUPS RIGHT NOW FOR 4 REASONS:
1. Backing up a full BD would require a burned BD disk filled to 25GB (aka a bluray burner for you)
2. Any file larger than 4GB can not be removed from the XMB.
3. It is uncertain if the exact disk size be taken into account.
4. The file does not begin at the beginning of the disk. (Some tweaking of the iso might be able to change this.)
