Manic only posted the source ?
If yes, try to contact him (by private message here for example) and I think he'll send you a compiled version if you have some problems compiling it.
The actual version create most of the .idx files correctly at the moment, so yeah, there should be a problem (except four ones, and three of them are useless, except the FREE01.AFS, "Non-player character" speech).
If the problem don't come from the idx creator, do you use a "full" dump version ? (not a ripped one).
If not, I put one on Mininova (always seeded with my server at 200 Kb/s each) :
- Version 1 : Full GD 1 PAL untouched (English Voices / English Subs, menus are multilanguages for most like the original game)
- Version 2 : Full GD 1 PAL modified (Japanese Voices / Japanese Subs, except the menus and others which are always in multilanguages for the ones which are like that in the original game).
Just use the search function there and search "Shenmue", then in the search resultats, search thoses names : "Shenmue_1_GD_1_PAL_Voix_Anglaises_FULL_DUMP_[B16CF7B3].rar" & "Shenmue 1 GD 1 PAL Voix Japonaises FULL DUMP [661CC400] rar" (first one is the English Voices one (Version 1 upper) and the other one is the Japanese Voices one (Version 2 upper)
If you search menus text, notebook text, places text and such, there are in the 1ST_READ.BIN, but you need to modify them manually (with a hexaeditor), and you are limited for most by the original size (even if I manage to gain a bit of space for the main screen menu).
The original french one had two words left in english (dunno why)
Notebook and Item
I replaced "Notebook" with "Carnet" (french translation), which was fine because "Carnet" is "two letters shorter" so I just put space for the "two others letters".
"Item" is "Objet" in french, there was a "letter" missing for it. I managed to get it by shifting all the words of this menus (after a few tests to get a proper result, like in romhacking).
Too bad it doesn't work for all the things (Notebook's sentences seems to have pointers, because if there are shifted, bugs appears).
Anyway, maybe Manic will do a program later to modify it ? (Even if it's easy to modify it manually with Hex WorkShop as texts are in ASCII so displayed by default on the right column of Hex WorkShop).
I also wrote down somewhere all the adress with some interesting texts from this file, when I'll get my hard drive back (probably tomorrow), I can post them if you are interested (hexadecimal adress of places names, nootebook entries, menus entries, moves entries, etc...).
